Smoking and Periodontal Disease

A number of studies have shown that smoking is a risk factor for suffering periodontal diseases. Smokers are more likely to develop more severe periodontal diseases, and thus experience tooth loss, than non-smokers.
In addition, smokers show less response to periodontal treatment and less effective periodontal preventive treatment (maintenance).
