Pregnant Women with Periodontal Disease Have Twice the Risk to Deliver a Premature Child

A report from the Spanish Society for Periodontics (SEPA) warns about the potential risk of gum disease on pregnant women.

“A great deal of premature births could be avoided in Spain by improving the health and care of gums". This is the conclusion reached in the publicly available SEPA’s report. This document shows that, in Spain, future mothers’ periodontal disease could be one of the risk factors involved in up to 14,000 premature births per year. 100,000 pregnant Spanish women approximately would have periodontal disease, being twice as likely to deliver a premature child than women with healthy gums.

It is also highlighted in the report that only 15% of the Spanish population from 35 to 44 years old would have healthy gums. The remaining 85% presents at least gingivitis and, out of those, 25% suffers of periodontitis also.

In this context, the SEPA’s president maintains that "treating periodontitis before and during pregnancy, and even more important, preventing it, could reduce significantly the cases of premature births in Spain”.
